The Ford Explorer was introduced as an updated replacement for the 2-Door Ford Bronco II. With the introduction of the New Ford Explorer, they could offer customers a 4 Door Full-Size SUV that could handle daily life activities as well as exploring off-road adventuring. It would be a huge success for Ford for decades to come! The Front Seat Covers from the Bronco II were carried over to the Ford Explorer with some minor fabric differences, but it was in the rear seat that we saw the bigger changes. The Bronco II with its 2 Doors offered a 50/50 Split-Bench Seat while the All New Ford Explorer Seat Covers would have to handle, not just the 50/50 Split-Bench, but a New 60/40 Split-Bench Seat for the 4 Door version. Ford Explorer Seat Covers have evolved over the years, with it's special Eddie Bauer Seats in 1995 with a Pull-Out Knee Support and the evolution to the low back bucket seat with adjustable head rests and even creating a 40/20/40 split bench for the second row when 7-passanger seating was introduced. Northwest Seat Covers was along for the Journey designing Ford Explorer Seat Covers - Right from the Beginning and waiting for the arrival of the New 2027 Ford Explorer when it is introduced.
The original Ford Explorer Seat Covers featured Flat Woven & Velour Fabrics that were shared with the Ford Ranger such as the 1995 "Cirrus" & "Kale" which showed off colours such as Med. Graphite, Med. Saddle, Med. Willow and Med. Lapis Blue.
Ford Explorer Seat Covers offered in 1997 were "Senter" & "Tweed" in Dark Graphite, Med. Graphite and Med. Prairie Tan. For the 6th generation the fabric offerings were whittled down to a narrow range of "Armstrong" - Sandstone, "Everest Knit" in M. Stone and the main fabrics called "Switchback" and only in Ebony and M. Lt. Camel - No more Red, Green or Blues. With Northwest Seat Covers, you can personalize your interior with a wide range of Ford Explorer Seat Covers that will protect your seats, especially if you want to sell or trade it in the future!
Ford Explorer Seat Covers for the 1st generation (1991-1994) were essentially carryovers from the Ford Bronco. The front seat cover styles were very much the same with High Bucket Seats and a 60/40 Split-Bench Seat with High Backs and a Fold-Down Arm Rest. It was the rear seat covers that were different, with 4 doors featuring a 60/40 Split-Bench seat and the 2 doors having a 50/50 split bench seat.
The 2nd Gen (1995-2001) Explorer Seat Covers kept the High Back Buckets and the 60/40 Bench Seat but added New Low Back Bucket Seats with Adjustable Head Rests. The rear bench seat covers were virtually identical to the first generation.
The 3rd Gen (2002-2005) Ford Explorer Seat Covers were a bit of a departure with the introduction of 3 Rows of seating. The first row had the High Buckets and Low Back Buckets with moveable head rests. All New was the 2nd Row with two versions of the 60/40 split bench seat - one had 2 adjustable head rests with a fixed integrated bump of a head rest, while the other 60/40 featured an integrated seat belt and all three head rests being adjustable. The latest addition was the 40/20/40 Split Bench Seat, where 3 passengers could sit on individual seats with their own head rests. In the third row, was a solid bench seat, similar in style to what you would find in a mid-70s chevy truck, a late 70s Ford truck and a mid-80s Dodge Truck, but smaller in size that accommodated 2 occupants.
The 4th Gen (2006-2010) Ford Explorer Seat Covers were updated for all three rows of the Explorer. The first row only offere the low back bucket seats with moveable headrests. The 2nd row explorer seat covers had two configurations, the 60/40 split bench seat with the 2 adjustable HRs and the fixed middle bump of a headrest as well as a new set of Middle Row Bucket Seats with Adjustable Head Rests. The 3rd row on offer was a 50/50 Split Bench Seat with 2 head rests.
The 5th Gen (2011-2019) Ford Explorer Seat Covers were quite similar with the front seat maintaining its Low Back Bucket Seat and Head Rests. The 2nd Row Maintained the Low Back Bucket and Heads, but also introduced a modified 60/40 split bench with 3 Adjustable Headrests and another version with a Fold-Out Arm Rest. The 3rd Row kept the 50/50 split bench seat but offered it as a Power and Non-Power Folding Bench with the Flip-Forward Headrests.
The 6th Gen (2020-2026) Ford Explorer Seat Covers introduced some surprising twists for the middle row seats. The fronts required two specially designed Explorer Seat Covers because, even though they were still Low back Bucket Seats with moveable headrests, they had size variations for the ST & Platinum trim levels and another variation for the XLT & Limited trim levels. The middle row upgraded the buckets to Captain Seats which are low bucket seats with HRs and the addition of inboard armrests. They also brought back the 40/20/40 split bench with HRs to seat 3 occupants, but one version of the 40/20/40 bench seat had a long arm rest cover that folded out of the middle seat backrest. The 3rd row is the reliable 50/50 split bench seat with the flip-forward head rests.
Ford Explorer seat covers have remained fairly steady with mild seat style changes over the last 30 years, but it doesn't mean that any universal seat cover will do because of all the variations, only Custom Seat Covers for the Ford Explorer will be able to provide the protection you need for all the family memories on weekends and vacation getaways.
